Care reimbursements

Discover our guide on the reimbursement of physiotherapy sessions in Luxembourg by the National Health Fund or the Public Sector Fund. View the details to understand the process of covering physiotherapy costs.

Prescription

Coverage of physiotherapy costs in Luxembourg requires a medical prescription for any reimbursement.

Foreign prescriptions (French, Belgian, German, etc.) must be written in French, German or English, with all the information required to be processed by the CNS.

Procedure

1. Submission of the medical prescription

Give the medical prescription during the first session to your physiotherapist.

Our team is responsible for communicating it to the Health Fund. Please note that for the prescription to be validated, it must be presented to the CNS. Our team is responsible for respecting the administrative procedure and sending your prescription within 31 days following the date of its establishment.

2. Payment

Third party payment system:

The insured person only pays their share of the costs directly to the physiotherapist, who then sends an invoice to the CNS to receive reimbursement for the part covered by health insurance. This system only applies if the validation request comes from the physiotherapist and if the treatment is carried out in the Grand Duchy. If the insured person requests validation of the prescription themselves or if the care is provided outside the Grand Duchy, the costs must be paid in full and the fund will reimburse on request. Cross-border workers must refer to their local fund for coverage of care received in their country of residence.

Advance of costs by the insured:

For the advance of costs by the insured, the physiotherapist presents an invoice at the end of the treatment. This invoice includes the total amount to be paid, including the share payable by the fund and possibly that of the insured. Once paid, the insured requests

reimbursement of his share to his competent fund (CNS or public sector health fund). To be reimbursed, the physiotherapy invoice must include: the insured's registration number, first and last name, and the cover number; be paid correctly; be accompanied by the medical prescription.

Support rate

The rate of coverage of the costs of physiotherapy sessions in Luxembourg is set at:

• 70% for acts linked to a common pathology

• 100% for serious pathology

• 100% for post-surgical rehabilitation

• 100% for treatments of children under 18 years old.

The number of sessions covered depends on the treatment:

• 8 for a common pathology

• 64 for a serious pathology

• 32 for post-surgical rehabilitation.

The physiotherapist's travel costs can be covered as a flat rate provided that:

• The doctor indicates on the prescription that it is medically necessary for the physiotherapist to come to the insured's home to provide treatment.

• The trip takes place on Luxembourg territory. Travel across the border is not supported.

• Once these conditions are met, the travel package is covered at the same rate as that applied to the document issued during the trip.

Care for cross-border workers

Cross-border workers have the choice of seeking treatment either in their country of residence or in Luxembourg. In France, he will benefit from the same reimbursements as a French employee. In Luxembourg, he will benefit from the same services as a Luxembourg resident, with a reimbursement rate of 80% for most services.

Concerning third-party payment, cross-border workers who buy medicines in Luxembourg with a prescription benefit from third-party payment for those concerned.

Supplementary insurance or mutual insurance

Reimbursements can vary from 70 to 90% depending on the case, but only for certain medical services and certain medications. Mutual insurance companies offer simple offers which allow reimbursement of expenses not covered by France or Luxembourg. These reimbursements depend on the guarantees chosen in the contracts offered by the mutual insurance companies.

By subscribing to complementary health insurance, you can obtain reimbursements for care carried out in your country of residence or in Luxembourg. Make sure your contract supports reimbursements in both countries.

Osteopathy

Currently, you do not need to consult your doctor before contacting an osteopath. Please note that currently, the National Health Fund (CNS) does not reimburse osteopathy.

However, a growing number of complementary health insurance plans offer substantial reimbursement for sessions carried out by an osteopath. Ask your insurer if you want to know your coverage rate.

In conclusion, all additional information is available on the CNS website, cns.lu. Do not hesitate to contact our team so that we can guide you or explain the process to you.
